Robots and Immigrants

The non-economist's summary of my master's thesis. The common view on both immigrants and robots is that they might take 'our' jobs away. But if robots are a better replacement for immigrant workers than native-born labour, reducing immigration won't improve employment and wages for the native-born - it will just speed up the trend in robotisation.

What pay gap?

The gender pay gap matters because it suggests inequalities of opportunity. I look at evidence implying that women lose out on salary progression due to moving into part-time work after childbirth, that they are less successful at bargaining for higher wages, and that they work in lower paying firms on average.

Immigration doesn't Hurt

The evidence suggests that immigrants rarely causes either job losses, or wage reductions for the native population. Despite widely held beliefs to the contrary, low skill workers do not seem to pose a particular threat.

University Fees are Good for Equality

Abolishing tuition fees would be like redistributing wealth from the poor to the rich. While the benefits of university education go to the more advantaged sections of society, the cost would be borne by society as a whole, including those who don't go to university.
